"The historic Market Hall Theatre in Peterborough is one of many projects which our Government has supported across the city and Southern Ontario to create jobs and strengthen our economy," said MP Del Mastro, on behalf of Canada's Transport and Infrastructure Minister, John Baird. "As we enter the second phase of our Economic Action Plan, our government will continue to help families and workers across the country."

"I am proud to be a part of a project that will ensure that Peterborough's local infrastructure needs are met," said MPP Leal. "A thriving cultural institution such as Market Hall will be a destination point for residents and visitors alike."

"Culture contributes to a complete and vibrant community that attracts new residents, new business and new investment," said Mayor Ayotte. "We are thrilled with the support from both the governments of Ontario and Canada to help preserve Market Hall as a centre for arts and culture in Peterborough."

The work on Market Hall, along with the Clock Tower, will fully restore a nationally significant heritage facility and prolong the life of this remarkable example of late Victorian commercial architecture. Today, Market Hall is one of Peterborough's leading cultural and performing arts venues.

Canada and Ontario are each providing up to nearly $3.23 million of total eligible project costs to support the Market Hall restoration. The remaining costs are the responsibility of the City of Peterborough and the Market Hall Performing Arts Centre. The total eligible project cost is $9.68 million.

Federal financial support for the Market Hall project is being provided through the $4-billion, Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The Province of Ontario's contribution comes from the 2009 provincial budget, Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future. Ontario's two-year, $32.5-billon investment will support more than 300,000 jobs and strengthen Ontario's economy.

To date, Canada and Ontario have announced close to $11 billion in joint funding for more than 2,600 infrastructure projects across the province to stimulate the economy and create jobs. During these challenging economic times, the governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground across the province to create jobs now and build the infrastructure we will need for future prosperity.
