G8 Legacy Fund
The $50 million G8 Legacy Fund, established in 2009, provided funding for infrastructure that supported the hosting of the G8 Summit in June 2010 in Huntsville, Ontario.
By enhancing local infrastructure, the G8 Legacy Fund helped showcase the Muskoka and Parry Sound region to Summit participants, along with national and international media. The funding helped the region to prepare for the event, provided a legacy, and enhanced the tourism image of the region.
The projects – all of which were completed before the Summit – included: the construction of the G8 Centre, improvements to local parks and public spaces, new streetscapes, roadway improvements, improved gateway signage and other projects.
The G8 includes eight of the world's leading economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to current challenges facing the world.
