Seamless transition from previous to new infrastructure programs

The Government of Canada's support for public infrastructure has never been stronger. The $53-billion New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest infrastructure plan in our nation's history. The New Building Canada Plan has been open for business since March 28, 2014, and we are ensuring a seamless transition from the original Building Canada Plan to the new Plan.

Infrastructure funding flowing to projects today

There will be no break in infrastructure funding. Infrastructure Canada expects to flow approximately $5 billion every year over the next ten years. Federal support is reimbursed after eligible project costs are submitted, and many large-scale projects take many years to complete.

Under the renewed Gas Tax Fund (GTF), municipalities have access to $2 billion this year of predictable and stable funding. The GTF flows steadily each year, and comprises the largest portion of the New Building Canada Plan.

In addition, municipalities are also benefiting right now from the GST Rebate, which they can use to support their local infrastructure needs.

Infrastructure Canada is now accepting applications under the $14-billion New Building Canada Fund.

Under the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component (PTIC) of this Fund, priorities are submitted by provinces and territories. Many provinces and territories have identified projects, and numerous applications have been received and are currently under review. This process is the same as the original Building Canada Fund.

Details on how to apply for both PTIC and the National Infrastructure Component.

The first public announcement was made under the New Building Canada Fund on May 26, 2014, when the Government of Canada announced that it is setting aside up to $150 million for the Valley Line Stage 1 Light Rail Transit expansion project in Edmonton under the New Building Canada Fund – Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component.

Infrastructure projects already underway this construction season

Over $6 billion continues to flow from the original Building Canada Plan and other government infrastructure programs to support more than 2,500 infrastructure projects across the country, including:

  • The rapid transit Evergreen Line in British Columbia;
  • The Grande Prairie wastewater treatment plant in Alberta;
  • The Saskatoon Flood Control project in Saskatchewan;
  • The Winnipeg Convention Centre in Manitoba;
  • The light rail Confederation Line in Ottawa, Ontario;
  • The Outremont rail switching yard revitalization project in Quebec;
  • The building of the new Halifax Central Library in Nova Scotia;
  • The Charlottetown-Miltonvale well field drilling and water supply upgrades in Prince Edward Island;
  • The Team Gushue Highway Extension in Newfoundland and Labrador; and
  • The building of the Garcelon Civic Centre in New Brunswick.

Through all of its infrastructure funding, both current and new, the Government of Canada continues to support job creation, economic growth, and modern public infrastructure that contribute to the quality of life of Canadians.
